Musali has been used in the indigenous system of medicine for a long period. It is an important ingredients in nutritive tonic and aphrodisiacs products of Ayurveda. It is used in “Chywana prash”. In allopathic, Unani and homeopathic systems of medicine, musali is used as an ingredient in several formulations.
Botanical description
Botanical name – Curculigo Orchioides, Gaertn
Family – Amaryllida – ceae
In Sanskrit – Musali, Talamuli, Suvaka, Hemapushpee etc.
Hindi – Musali, Kali musali, Tamil – Nilapanai
Musali is a small, annual plant with clongated tuberous root stock. The leaves are 15 to 45 cm long and 1.5 to 2.5 cm wide. Flowers are bright yellow in colour. Fruit is 4 seeded with a slender beak and spongy septa. Seeds are oblong, black and shiny.
Distribution:-
Musali grows well in Tropical and sub tropical regions with altitudes upto 1500 metres. It grows in kumaon (U.P.), khasia Hills, Bengal, Assam, Konkan the western penisula and chennai extending to kanyakumari.
Cultivation:-
Propagation is done by rhizome which planted at a distance of 12.5 X 12. 5 cm.
Chemistry:-
The tubers contain free sugars – 7.5%, mucilage – 8.12%, Hemi – cellulose 20.15% and other poly sachharides 17.01%. It contains a glycoside.

Tonic, diuretic, Astringent, Carminative Emollint, Aphrodisiac.
Uses:-
• Musali is extensively used by Ayurvedic Practitioners for a wide variety of ailments and particularly as an ingredient of Aphrodisiac perparatime. Musali’s aphordisiac properties has proved its use for treating Erectile dysfunction and increasing the potency. It improves sexual life and increases stamina. It is rich in glycosides and hence a remedy for impotency. It increases sperm count, semen volume, haemoglobin level and serum protein level.
• It is given in dysuria and polyuria. It is a remedy for diabetes.
• The plant is used in Phillipines for curing skin diseases.
• According to Caraka Samhita, shusruta samhita and vegabhatta, the herb is considered to be alternative, appetiser, fattening and restorative.
• It is given in cases of gonorrhoea, menorrhagia leucorrhoea and piles.
• It is used as medicine for leucoderma
• It is an effective remedy in cases of Arthritis, Rhemuatism and joint pains.
