Neem in Siddha Medicine
The venerable ancient tree, Neem (Azadirachta Indica) is said the bring happiness, according to Siddha Materia Medica.
Neem tree is considered to be a natural air – purifier. Parts of the tree have bean used in ayurveda and siddha medicines.
Siddha Meteria Medica Says:-
? Neem tree prevents occurrence of fevers caused by toxins.
? All parts of the tree, leaf, flowers, seeds, fruits. bark, root, trunk, Gum – are useful.
? Leaf – stimulant, Anthelmintic, Discutient
? Neem leaves are good medicine for treating stomach worms, fever, small – pox marks, wounds, ulcers, itching, skin diseases etc. Though neem is bitter, it is used for treating Jaundice.
? For cataract, diarrhoea, Boils, Night blindness etc, powder tender and matured neem leaves, add powdered ajamoda (omam – carum Ajmoda) and salt, in half the quantity of neem powder and consume.
? Paste made of neem leaves appliedon boils, help ripening flash and break, giving relief.
? Neem leaves are good insecticide.
Flowers
? Flowers are stomachic, stimulant and tonic
? Cure drynen in the mouth, tastelessness, belching, stomach worms etc. For this, the matured and old flowers are fried in ghee and are added with salt, Tamarind, fried chillies, curry leaves, all these finely crushed and made into a kind of “Chutney”.
? Flowers promote strength to the body.
? They prevent vomitting
Bark
Neem bark is tonic, astringent. It cures stomach ache. It reduces fatigue. It is used to treat skin diseases. It cures abnormal thirst, vomitting, lack of taste etc. It is powdered and consumed. Combined with thippili, the bark is mixed with water. Drinking this water cures joint pains, pelvic pain etc. The tree bark is boiled in Gingelly oil and mixed with other herbs & spices like turmeric, pepper etc. Usage of this oil for head – bath, cures. Sinus problems, Arthritis etc.
Bogar, the famous siddha Guru, prescribes a fairness drink made with neem bark, neem leaves, flower, inner sap, and Gum. He said that in 48 days, this herbal drink will make a person glow like the sun.
Siddha materia medica list a lot of medicinal uses of each and every part of the neem tree. No doubt, it calls the neem tree as a tree of happiness.
