Ways to improve Digestion

The basic essentiality of good health is un-impaired digestive power. What is the use of eating highly nutritions food when it does not get digested properly and the nutrients are not assimilated. Food, good sleep and pleasant family life are three important factor required for a healthy life.
Ayurveda teaches us what to eat and how to eat.
The symptoms of indigestion are Flatulence, pain, lack of appetite etc. The power which converts the food into energy suitable for the body is called “Jadaragni” in Ayurveda. (Jadaram – Stomach, Agni – Fire) the hot, Agni food helps digestion. Spices like mustard, corander, pepper chillies etc do not allow this digestive Agni to diminish.
The first aid for over eating un – timely food is drinking hot water. After a heavy feast, do not add to the discomfort by drinking chilled water or Bottled soft drinks.
The first morsed of food should be taken mixed with ghee Ghee stimulates Jadaragni. Food minus ghee is not good for digestion.
Tips to avert indigestion
• Over – eating that too frequently, and stress are to be avided.
• Lemon improves digestion. Extract juice from half – lemin, mix it in a glass of water, add salt and drink. Warm water is still better.
• Ginger also is a good substance that aids digestion. Take small pieces of ginger, dipped in salt.
• Mix Ginger Juice and lemon juice and take a spoonful of this.
• Mix a tsp of Jeera in a glass of water. Add a tsp of coriander juice and salt and consume.
• Omum water (Ajwain) is good. It can be taken with butter milk also.
• Asafoetida also is good stimulant for digestion. Powder of asafoetida, mixed with ghee and handful of cooked hot rice, and eaten, improves digestion. Asafoetida can be taken with butter milk also.
• Ayurveda suggests drink cold water after a meal of wheat substances, drink hot water after starchy foods and butter milk after eating pulses.
• Papayya (Papita) fruits aids digestion. It is a common practice in the western countries to add papaya pieces while cooking meat.
• Soak a tablespoon of cinnamon in a glass of water and after some time drink this to get rid of gas and flatulence.
• Pudina is also a well known substance for relieving stomach pain and improving digestion. It could be taken in the form of “Raitha”.
• Mix powders of ginger, cloves, Dania (coriander), Cardamon and take regularly, to keep indigestion away.
• Juice of curry leaves + Juice of lemon – helps digestion.
• Another mixed powderpreparation is – Black pepper + dried pudina + Dhania + Ginger + Jeera + Asafoetida all these are taken in equal quantities, mixed together and stored. Whenever needed or even daily, take a tip of this powder after meals.
• Juices of Grapes, Pine – apple, Pomegranate, Carrot aid digestion. These juice stimulate appetite.
• While eating, do not drink water when your mouth is full of food. Do not push the food down with water.
• Drink butter milk daily.
• Raisins also stimulate digestion.
• Pleasant surroundings, hot and tasty food, cooked rice with ghee – these promote health and well – being.
• Add fibre rich foods to your diet.
• Do not eat in a hurry.
• Ayurveda Advice:- Divide imaginarily the stomach into four portions. Two of these four are to be filled with food, one part with liquids and the remaining me part is to be left empty.
Ayurveda has excellent medicines for stomach ailments and digestion.
